HavÂing not revisÂitÂed The HobÂbit in some time, I’ve felt the familÂiar pull—shared by many readers—to return to Tolkien’s fairy-tale novÂel itself. It was my first expoÂsure to Tolkien, and the perÂfect book for a young readÂer ready to dive into moral comÂplexÂiÂty and a fulÂly-realÂized ficÂtionÂal world. And what betÂter guide could there be through The HobÂbit than Tolkien himÂself, readÂing (above) from the 1937 work? In this 1952 recordÂing in two parts (part 2 is below), the venÂerÂaÂble fanÂtaÂsist and scholÂar reads from his own work for the first time on tape. Tolkien begins with a pasÂsage that first describes the creaÂture GolÂlum; lisÂtenÂing to this descripÂtion again, I am struck by how much difÂferÂentÂly I imagÂined him when I first read the book. The GolÂlum of The HobÂbit seems someÂhow hoariÂer and more monÂstrous than many latÂer visuÂal interÂpreÂtaÂtions. This is a minor point and not a critÂiÂcism, but perÂhaps a comÂment on how necÂesÂsary it is to return to the source of a mythÂic world as rich as Tolkien’s, even, or espeÂcialÂly, when it’s been so well-realÂized in othÂer media. No one, after all, knows MidÂdle Earth betÂter than its creÂator. These readÂings were part of a much longer recordÂing sesÂsion, durÂing which Tolkien also read (and sang!) extenÂsiveÂly from The Lord of the Rings. A YouTube user has colÂlectÂed, in sevÂerÂal parts, a radio broadÂcast of that full sesÂsion, and it’s cerÂtainÂly worth your time to lisÂten to it all the way through. It’s also worth knowÂing the neat conÂtext of the recordÂing. Here’s the text that accomÂpaÂnies the video on YouTube: When Tolkien visÂitÂed a friend in August of 1952 to retrieve a manÂuÂscript of The Lord of the Rings, he was shown a “tape recorder”. HavÂing nevÂer seen one before, he asked how it worked and was then delightÂed to have his voice recordÂed and hear himÂself played back for the first time. His friend then asked him to read from The HobÂbit, and Tolkien did so in this...
